We needed to move to a bigger factory and to completely rearrange the workflow, starting once again from first principles and respecting the changing scale of our output. By now it was 2012, heading into 2013. We were making just over 40,000 bikes a year, and we needed to think about how things would be organised at some point in the future when we were doing multiples of that. This was going to be difficult, and risky. When small and medium-sized businesses go bust, very often the failure has been immediately preceded by a site move. It’s easy to see why. If you’re moving, it’s usually because you’re growing, so you will want to move to a space where you’ve got room to grow some more. For a while, therefore, you are trading a space that’s too small for one that’s too big; the overhead and rent cost becomes a bigger obligation every month compared with the size of your business. Add in the cost of the move itself, and the inevitable disruption and diversion of management attention, and you can see why this turns into a period of heightened vulnerability, in which any ill-timed piece of bad luck on the revenue side can trigger a crisis.
